Photo exhibition «perceive | perceive»

Art prints by Kursiv

Kursiv Photo Agency launched a new website with photos by Karsten Risseeuw. The website karstenrisseeuw.ch shows a selection of photos made by the agency owner Karsten Risseeuw, which can be purchased at art prints only. To be found are abstract photos, landscapes, as well as street photography. "I had the desire to get into new creative projects already for a long time and by the end of 2016 we gave this an extra push. A first exhibition took place at the location of Kursiv Photo Agency in St. Gallen and a the new infrastructure allows for more projects in the future», says Karsten Risseeuw.

A current exhibition in St. Gallen runs till February 12th in the Galerie Margrit Oertli. A limited number of photos is on display during the theatre play "Play Strindberg" in the theatre Parfin de Siecle at the same address.

SAB website relaunched

SAB website relaunched

Late 2016 the new SAB website has been quietly relaunched. Bright and light – the website comes with a fresh new look, a revamped logo, responsive design and the all new price recommendations 2017. Have a look around and tell us if you like what you see!

The Swiss Association of Photo Agencies and -Archives (SAB) is a collaboration of photo agencies in Switzerland, dedicated to transparency in licensing questions, professional rights management and services for editorial and commercial image buyers. Apart from the activities of each SAB member, the SAB provides widely acknowledged price recommendations, organises events and informs through its newsletter (german).

Stripe Payment added

Stripe payment added

We have just added an extra payment option. The Stripe Payment gateway offers a convenient and fast way to pay with your credit card.

PayPal remains an option, as many customers already have a PayPal account. PayPal is reliable and very convenient. For Switzerland though, our home market, PayPal has very rigid and restrictive rules in place. Payments are only possible with a PayPal Account (unlike from many other european countries) and to create a personal account, you need to add personal data for the US company. This is not usual for payments with credit card and logically causes all kinds of problems and dislikes.

Stripe offers a good alternative for those who do not have or do not want to have a PayPal account.

SAB Price Recommendations 2017

SAB Price Recommendations 2017

Just in time for the new year, SAB is launching its new version of the well-known "Price Recommendations for the Use of Images". The price recommendations have been completely reworked, simplified and adapted to the realities of the image market today, using a new tool as developed by Karsten Risseeuw of Kursiv. Future adjustments can now be automated easily. The brochure is offered as a PDF file in German, French and English and can be purchased via our web shop.

The SAB price list is a commitment to a transparent and realistic negotiating basis for the licensing of photos and illustrations. The price list is not a strict rule, but represents guideline prices - the data are to be regarded as price recommendations. The price recommendations have been a reliable tool for picture agencies, picture buyers and photographers alike for many years.

The price list deals with information on “Rights managed” and project-related licensing (RM).

What does "rights managed" mean?

Webmaster

Rights-managed images are licensed on a project-by-project basis. The price depends on the type of project, the image format, the circulation, the distribution and other criteria. A right of use is granted for this precisely defined application.

If an image is used for several projects, licensing is required for all applications. For simplicity, some providers also work here with flat-rate licenses that cover all print applications within a year in a country, for example.

In the case of images subject to licensing, the use is managed worldwide. This is how the term “rights managed,” “rights protected” or “RM” came to be used. One advantage is that precise information can be provided on request whether an image has already been used in a particular country for a particular industry. If desired, exclusive use can be agreed for RM images.

What does "royalty-free" mean?

Webmaster

Unfortunately, the naturalized term “royalty-free” is misleading. Royalty-free does not mean “without a license”, but refers to a specific licensing procedure.

With a royalty-free image – also called RF or royalty free – you receive a blanket right of use through the purchase. This means that you can use an image several times and for different projects without having to buy a new license for each use. The exact usage rights are defined by the provider’s EULA (end user license agreement). Important for this type of image licenses is the limitation to a certain number of users who are allowed to access the images. Royalty-free images are comparable to software licenses. As with a software license, there are restrictions on the number of workstations on which an image may be available.

Most providers today grant a right of use for 10 users of the same company at the same headquarters. Feeding the image into a company database or making it available via a network is usually prohibited. For extended needs, multi-user licenses can be solved.

For royalty-free images, the model releases and property releases are usually regulated. For commercial use this is of great importance. Check with each provider whether the release for advertising purposes, i.e. model releases for depicted persons or property releases for depicted brands, buildings etc. is available.

What are image licenses for?

Webmaster

Licenses regulate usage rights and take into account the interests of image providers as well as image users.

Various specialists work intensively on the production, processing and distribution of sophisticated picture collections. Copyright, distribution and usage rights apply to this work. In addition, the rights of third parties must be observed, such as those shown, trademarks, designs, etc. In simple terms, one speaks of “image rights”. The customer acquires a license to use the image material. This license is a contract that governs the release of an image for specific purposes.

There are two different licensing procedures: the one for licensed (rights protected, rights managed or RM) and the one for royalty-free (royalty-free or RF) images.
